Prioritising Air Quality

Conservatives recognise that air pollution has reached unacceptable levels in parts of our Borough and that improving air quality is a key priority.

We believe that all new houses should be equipped with solar panels, to provide renewable energy without having to lose fields to large solar farms.

The Conservative government has committed the UK to an ambitious target of ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030 – we believe this should be supported locally by ensuring all new houses built are equipped with an electric car charging point.

In addition, a Conservative administration at Maidstone Borough Council will support an ambitious programme of tree-planting, creating ‘pocket parks’ on every new development, to ensure all residents have access to green areas, improving mental health and maintaining biodiversity.

Conservative Cllr. John Perry states, “Addressing air quality is one of the most fundamental issues affecting our Borough. It's impact on health is now well documented and I believe that all our residents have the right to clean unpolluted air. Conservatives will take immediate steps to address this problem with a series of measures that are practical and straightforward to implement.”

Tom Cannon, who is standing as a candidate for the Borough Council in Bridge ward and for KCC in Maidstone Central also recognises the issue, "I only need to look at the layer of pollution on my windows to see the problems with air quality in the town. I am very supportive of measures such as tree planting and making sure if development happens we do it well. Environmentally aware development is incredibly sensible to avoid retro-fitting solar panels more than we need to. We need to be more long term in our approach and this is why we need a Conservative administration at MBC".
